Lasers and Nonlinear Optics

LASER stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. We all know that light is an electromagnetic wave. Each wave has its own brightness and colour, and vibrates at a certain angle, called polarization. This theory also applies to laser light but it is more parallel than any other light source. Every part of the beam has almost exact same direction and so the beam will diverge very little. A perfect laser can illuminate any object from any distance with an intense dot. As it is so parallel, it can be focused to very small diameters where concentration of light energy becomes so high that you can drill, cut, or turn with the ray. It is also possible to illuminate and examine very tiny details with the lasers, thus it is used in surgical applications and CD players as also. Nonlinear Optics is the part of optics dealing with optical nonlinearities and their applications. The nonlinearity is genuinely observed only at laser light intensities. The vacuum converts to nonlinear medium, as it crosses the Schwinger Limit. In nonlinear optics, the superposition principle does not hold. For applications, a wide area is concerned with the effects of optical nonlinearities in various situations, e.g. for the propagation of intense ultrashort pulses in optical fibers, in supercontinuum generation, or for optical signal processing. Nonlinear optics is also very important for many experiments in quantum optics.

Optical Imaging and Sensing

Optical imaging is a technique to observe in a non-invading way inside the body, similar what is done with x-rays.  But, unlike x-rays, which use ionizing radiation, optical imaging uses visible light and the special properties of photons to obtain detailed images of organs and tissues as well as smaller structures including cells and even molecules. These images are used by scientists for research and by clinicians for disease diagnosis and treatment. An optical sensor is a device that converts light rays into electronic signals. Similar to a photoresistor, it measures the physical quantity of light and translates it into a form read by the instrument. Generally, the optical sensor is part of a larger system assimilating a measuring device, a source of light and the sensor itself. This is generally connected to an electrical trigger, which reacts to a change in the signal within the light sensor.

Optoelectronics

Optoelectronics is the branch of technology concerned with the combined use of electronics and light. Optoelectronics is the field of technology that associates the physics of light with electricity. It incorporates the design, study and manufacture of hardware devices that convert electrical signals into photon signals and photons signals to electrical signals. The device that converts an electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical is considered as an optoelectronic device. Optoelectronics is built up on the quantum mechanical effects of light on electronic materials, sometimes in the presence of electric fields, especially semiconductors. Optoelectronic technologies comprise of laser systems, remote sensing systems, fibre optic communications, optical information systems, and electric eyes medical diagnostic systems.

Applied Industrial Optics

Optics is the field of Physics that comprises the behaviour and characteristics of light, adding its relations with materials and the creation of tools that use or distinguish it. Generally, optics defines the nature of visible, ultraviolet, and infrared light. As light is an electromagnetic wave, other types of electromagnetic radiation viz. X-rays, microwaves, and radio waves display similar properties. Optics is part of everyday life. The ubiquity of visual systems in biology indicates the central role optics plays as the science of one of the five senses. Many people benefit from eyeglasses or contact lenses, and optics are integral to the functioning of many consumer goods including cameras. Rainbows and mirages are examples of optical phenomena. Optical communication provides the backbone for both the Internet and modern telephony. The major drivers include the demand for power-efficient smartphones and tablets, innovation in new generation LED lighting, demand for high-end hospital imaging equipment, utilization of sensors in smart control system and factory automation, and an effort to ensure safety and performance in automotive sector. Separately from their application in LAN procedures and the information allocations trade, the fiber optical sensors are furthermore being cast-off in the oil and gas manufacturing, wind vivacity area, country security maneuvers, and vivid constructions. A difficulty associated with these sensors is interference from multiple effects. A sensor intended to measure strain or pressure may be very temperature-sensitive. Intense R&D has been conducted over the last five years to provide means for distinguishing between various effects. The high organization expenses remain an obstruction to development. Be that as it may, this situation could change as government subsidizing activities are boosting R&D in the fiber optics field.

Fiber Laser Technology

Fiber lasers are basically different from other laser types; in a fiber laser, the active medium that produces the laser beam is actually isolated within the fiber optic itself. This discriminates them from fiber-delivered lasers where the beam is merely transported from the laser resonator to the beam delivery optics. Fiber lasers are now widely known because of its most focusable or highest brightness of any laser type. The essentially scalable concept of fiber lasers has been used to scale multimode fiber lasers up to the output power greater than 50 kW and single mode fiber lasers capable of 10kW in power. Optical imaging is an imaging procedure that generally defines the behaviour of perceptible, ultraviolet, and infrared light used in imaging. Since light is an electromagnetic wave, similar indications happen in X-rays, microwaves, radio waves.

Lasers in Medicine

There are some surgical operations that are perplexing to perform with the conventional scalpel. Initial trials with laser beam showed that a finely focused beam from a carbon dioxide gas laser could cut through human tissue effortlessly and neatly. The surgeon could direct the beam from any angle by using a mirror attached on a movable metal arm. Therefore, now a day’s laser beam is the most desirable tool which is used as a standby for the conventional blade to perform difficult surgeries. Lasers were measured as most operative in functioning on parts that are informal to reach-areas on the body's peripheral, counting the ears, skin, mouth, eyes and nose. But in recent years doctors have established the remarkable progress in emerging laser techniques for use in internal exploration and surgery. For illustration lasers are gradually used to clean plaque from people's arteries.

Optical Technologies

Light, like radio, consists of electromagnetic waves. The major difference between the two is that light waves are much shorter than radio waves. The use of electromagnetic waves for long-distance communications was the beginning of an industry known first as wireless and later as radio. Lasers emit high-intensity light beams. In laser and optical technologies, professionals channel these beams for use in scientific instruments, engineering, biomedical research, communication and medicine. Furthermore, laser and optical technology can further the fields of medicine, science and engineering through the development and application of new technologies.

Nano and Quantum Sciences

Nanophysics and all nanoscale sciences have been strongly on the rise for over twenty years and promise many more groundbreaking developments. The nanoworld is a land of dwarves: we are fascinated by the smallest functional structures making up matter, whose size is on the order of a nanometer – a billionth of a meter. The laws of the nanoworld are different from those governing our everyday experience. Quantum effects are important in most materials and give rise to different properties than we are familiar with on a macroscopic scale.

In the quantum world, we observe many attractive and at first sight unfamiliar miracles – such as quantum particles that can be in a superposition of unalike positions at the same time, or quantum jumps whose exact point in time is necessarily haphazard. As puzzling as these phenomena may seem, we are already seeing signs that they will form the basis for a revolution of modern technology. There is almost no other field of science where pure basic research and technological applications of revolutionary impact are so seamlessly intertwined. A hot topic is the fast-growing field of quantum computing and quantum technology.

Optical penetration and actual penetration, can vary broadly depending on the absorptivity of the astrophysical atmosphere. Optical penetration is an amount of the annihilation coefficient or absorptivity upto a definite 'depth' of a star's makeup. The assumption here is that either the extinction coefficient or the column number density is known. These can generally be calculated from other equations if a fair amount of information is known about the chemical makeup of the star. From the definition, it is also vibrant that large optical depths resemble to advanced rate of obscuration. Optical depth can therefore be thought of as the impenetrability of a medium. The extinction coefficient can be calculated using the transfer equation.

Quantum Optics

Quantum optics is an arena of exploration that uses semi-classical and quantum-mechanical physics to study wonders connecting light and its communications with material at submicroscopic heights. Quantum theory states that, light can be measured not only as an electromagnetic wave but also as a stream of particles called photons which travel with the vacuum speed of light. These particles should not be classical billiard balls, but as quantum mechanical elements labelled by a wave function spread over a determinate area. Each constituent part transmits one quantum of energy. That energy influenced by a solo photon resembles accurately to the shift between distinct energy levels in an atom that discharged the photon; substantial captivation of a photon is the inverse procedure. Einstein's clarification of impulsive emanation also foretold the presence of stirred discharge, the code upon which the laser rests. However, the authentic origination of the laser many years later was reliant on a process to yield a population overturn. The use of statistical mechanics is essential to the perceptions of quantum optics: Light is labelled in terms of field operators for construction and extermination of photons, in the language of quantum electrodynamics. This state, which can be used to roughly define the output of a single-frequency laser well above the laser threshold, shows Poissonian photon number figures. Via certain nonlinear communications, a comprehensible state can be malformed into a clasped coherent state, by applying an embracing operator which can exhibit super- or sub-Poissonian photon statistics. Such light is called squeezed light. Other important quantum features are interrelated to associations of photon statistics between unlike beams. For example, impulsive parametric down-conversion can produce so-called 'twin beams', where each photon of one beam is linked with a photon in the other beam. Atoms are measured as quantum mechanical oscillators with a distinct energy spectrum, with the conversions between the energy eigen states being determined by the captivation or emanation of light according to Einstein's theory. For solid state matter, one practices the energy band models of solid state physics. This is important to considerate how light is spotted by solid-state devices, usually used in experiments.

Optical Communications and Networking

Optical communications networks are enhancing a vital role such as there is high demand for capacity links. DWDM which means dense wavelength division multiplexing is widely deployed at the core networks to deliver high capacity transport systems. Surface Enhanced Spectroscopy (SES)

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) or Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy is a surface sensitive technique which enhances Raman scattering by the molecules adsorbed on the rough metal surfaces or by the nanostructures such as plasmonic magnetic silica nanotubes and the enhancement factor can be as much as 10^10 to 10^11, which means the technique may detect single molecules. The machinery of enhancement effect of SERS is a staple of discussion in the literature. There are two primary theories and their mechanisms differ substantially, distinguishing them experimentally has not been forthright. The electromagnetic theory recommends the excitation of localized surface plasmons, and then the chemical theory recommends the formation of charge transfer complexes. The chemical theory applies only for the species that have formed a chemical bond with surface. So, it cannot explain the observed signal enhancement in all the cases, whereas electromagnetic theory can put on even in those cases where the specimen is physiosorbed only to the surface. It has been revealed newly that SERS enhancement can arise even when enthusiastic molecule is comparatively far apart from the surface which groups metallic nanoparticles permitting surface plasmon phenomena. Surface enhanced spectroscopy has the potential to enhance both the in and outcoupling of photons with a molecule by many orders of magnitude. Conventional plasmonic surface enhancement services only single-resonant enhancement, if optimal enhancement of at most a single optical transition. So-called dual-resonant enhancement can be used to overawed this issue, but needs more complex surface designs.

Laser Systems

LASER stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. We all know that light is an electromagnetic wave. Each wave has its own brightness and colour, and vibrates at a certain angle, called polarization. This theory also applies to laser light but it is more parallel than any other light source. Every part of the beam has almost exact same direction and so the beam will diverge very little. With a decent laser, an object at a detachment of 1 km can be irradiated with a spot about 60 mm in radius. As it is so parallel, it can be focused to very small diameters where concentration of light energy becomes so high that you can drill, cut, or turn with the ray. It is also possible to illuminate and examine very tiny details with the lasers, thus it is used in surgical applications and CD players as also. It can also be made very monochromic, thus only one light wavelength is present. This is not the instance with the ordinary light sources. White light contains all colours in the spectrum, but even a coloured light, such as a red LED contains a repeated interval of red wavelengths.

Industrial Applications of Laser and Photonics -Overview, Challenges and Current Trends

Industrial Applications of Laser:-

Laser is a source of energy endowed with extra-ordinary properties. These special properties have been detailed in the earlier section on "Properties of lasers". Due to its unique nature, lasers have found applications in almost in every field of human activities, whether it is science, medicine, industry, agriculture, entertainment or informatics, to mention a few. It may be brought to the notice of the reader that all the basic properties of laser are not necessary for its use in every application. In fact, it is the application that decides what all properties are essential in the laser for the successful implementation of an activity. For example, high coherence of laser is an essential requirement in holographic applications, whereas the same plays a nominal role, in range finding or for that matter in laser - light shows. In this section, Industrial applications of Lasers have been discussed briefly. Other applications are discussed in other sections. Today, laser is probably the most versatile tool available for various material processing applications like welding, drilling, cutting, heat treatment (hardening, annealing, glazing, cladding etc.) as well as certain very special applications like clearance of interstellar fragments, laser balancing, isolated refinement and decommissioning of components of unexploited nuclear installations, laser ablation, oil and gas exploration, automotive industry etc. Further, laser material processing (LMP) scores very high in the processing of difficult to machine materials such as, hardened metals, composites and ceramics to name a few, compared to the normal mechanical material processing techniques. In this section, our intention is to provide the basic concepts rather than the details.

Applications of Photonics:-

The photonics industry, photonics symposiums in the world is very broad in scope with applications ranging from telecommunications fiber optic links to cancer treatments. Applications of photonics are ubiquitous. Included are all areas from everyday life to the most advanced science, e.g. telecommunications, light detection, information processing, metrology, holography, spectroscopy, medicine, laser material processing, visual art, Bio photonics, robotics etc. The potential economic impact of photonic technologies in the next ten years is considerable and a number of industrial organizations have predicted growth rates of up to 25% with total markets of hundreds of billions of dollars. Photonics meetings, Photonic technologies have major impact on the world economy with a current global market of €300 billion and projected market value of over €600 billion in 2020. Growth in the photonics industry more than doubled that of the worldwide GDP (gross domestic product) between 2005 and 2011. Photonics impacts around 10% of the European economy. This leverage is generated by a European photonics market worth €58.5billion (21% of the world market) and a European photonics industry employing 290,000 people.

Laser Overview-

A laser, abbreviated as Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, is a very penetrating, highly steering beam of light. A laser is commonly formed by "exciting" the atoms or molecules in a substantial in a very precise custom until they emanate photons in a very systematized or articulate way. Chemical lasers are diplomacies whose enthusiastic species are formed by chemical reactions. Solid-state lasers use a crystalline or glass material doped with an ion, which is the lasing species.

Photonics is today a key revolution driver in many established applications like communications, measurement and safety and laser supported manufacturing. Optics Overview:-

The physics and mathematics of wave motion underlie many important phenomena. The water wave on the sea, the vibration of a violin string, and the quantum mechanical wave associated with an electron can all be described in a similar way. Light too, often displays properties that are wave-like. We will start the course looking at "ray" optics, but then pause for a general treatment of waves of all types. We will start this waves section by reviewing ideas of oscillations and simple harmonic motion, and go on to look at the physics of travelling and standing waves. We will apply these ideas to various types of wave, and see how all-pervading this topic is in physics. We will then be in a position to consider a number of phenomena in which the wave properties of light are important. Optics is the study of light and its uses. "Light" is electromagnetic radiation which can be detected by our eyes, i.e. electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths in the range ~400 nm - 700 nm (though often very similar ideas apply beyond both ends of this wavelength range). In this lecture course, we will look at basic ideas of light propagation, geometrical optics (imaging, etc.), interference and diffraction of light, and some of the many uses to which light is put. Far from being just an "old" subject, optics is becoming increasingly important as more and more use is being made of lasers and optoelectronics in industry and society. We will look at various examples including laser-based remote sensing, optical communications, laser-based length measurement, and optical data storage (the CD). The last topic is the one which has brought lasers, precision optics, and optoelectronics into many households; we will be using this example throughout the course to illustrate the various optical phenomena that we shall be attempting to explain.
