Dennis Matthews, Ph.D., is the Director Emeritus of the NSF Center for Biophotonics Science and Technology, Director of the UC Davis Ecosystem for Biophotonics Innovation and Site Director of the Center for Biophotonics Sensors and Systems. He is also a Professor Emeritus in the UC Davis Department of Neurological Surgery and a member of the Biomedical Engineering, Applied Sciences and Clinical Sciences Graduate Groups. He is a previous Program Leader and Division Leader at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He is the co-founder and Chief Scientist at the Tahoe institute for Rural Healthcare Research, the founder of the University of California Biophotonics Alliance and the Biophotonics4Life Worldwide Consortium. He is also the sole proprietor of LifeLight Resources LLC, a biophotonics-based consulting company. He has recently become the Chief Technical Officer in a startup company called Cardiac Motion LLC. While he is credited for inventing and developing x-ray wavelength lasers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Dr. Matthews' continuing interest is in the translation and commercialization of new physical science and engineering technologies for grand challenges in medicine and the life sciences. His current interests are in developing optical, RF and x-ray technologies for disease diagnosis and treatment. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the Society of Photo and Industrial Engineers and the Optical Society of America. He has more than 280 publications and >30 patents and is the co-editor of the Journal of Biophotonics. Dr. Matthews is credited for raising more than $180M in grant funds in his career, helping create 12 startup companies and in directing R&D programs as large as $50M/yr.

Expertise in the synthesis, characterization, and application of nano-structured, superconducting and magnetic materials, LEED and Auger electron characterization of thin films, Low and High Tc superconductors, Magnetic Characterization using SQUID, Materials Characterization, Mossbauer spectroscopy, Nanotechnology: Applications in Medicine, Occupational and consumer product safety management and engineering, Optical characterization of electronic materials, Scanning Electron Microscopy , X-ray diffraction, and Transmission Electron microscopy. Sergei A. Kozlov, Doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, professor, dean of the faculty of photonics and optoinformatics, a renowned expert in nonlinear optics and laser physics of ultrashort pulses. In 1982 he graduated with honors from the Department of Quantum Electronics Engineering Physics Faculty LITMO. 1982-1985 years. - Graduate student of quantum electronics. He received degrees as Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (1986), associate professor in the Department of Physics (1992), Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (1997), a professor in the department of Photonics and optoinformatics. He was awarded the Medal of A. Lebedeva, the medal "In memory of the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg". Professor Yasar Onel is tenured faculty at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, USA. He got his Ph.D. from London University in 1975. He was worked at the Queen Mary University, London, UK, Neuchatel and Geneva Universities in Switzerland before joining the University of Texas at Austin for two years. He moved to Iowa in 1988. He is an experimental High Energy physicist who has expertise in building particle physics detectors. He is also an expert on photodetectors and calibration systems used in large scale experiments. He has worked on several experiments at Fermilab, USA and CERN, Switzerland. He is currently funded by the US Department of Energy and also previously from NSF and NATO. He has more than 800 publications in peer reviewed journals and was an editor of two books and has 4 patent applications. He is a James Van Allen Natural Sciences Fellow and APS Fellow.

Experimental elementary particle physics and nuclear physics

Prior to joining UCF in 2001, Dr. Wu was with Hughes Research Laboratories (Malibu, California) where the first laser was invented. He received his Ph.D. in Laser Physics from University of Southern California (Los Angeles), and BS in Physics from National Taiwan University (Taipei). His research at UCF focuses in five areas: 1. Advanced displays, including quantum dots and sunlight readable LCDs and OLEDs, 2. Wearable displays including augmented reality and virtual reality, 3. Adaptive lenses, 4. Spatial light modulators, and 5. Biosensors. Dr. Wu is a Charter Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (2012) and one of the first six inductees of the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame (2014). He is the recipient of 2014 OSA Esther Hoffman Beller medal, 2011 SID Slottow-Owaki prize, 2010 OSA Joseph Fraunhofer award, 2008 SPIE G. G. Stokes award and 2008 SID Jan Rajchman prize. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, OSA, SID, and SPIE. From 2004 to 2008, he was the founding chief editor of the IEEE/OSA Journal of Display Technology. Dr. Wu has co-authored 7 books, over 480 journal papers, and obtained 83 U.S. patents. Several of his patents have been implemented in display and photonic devices.

Emlyn Hughes is a Professor of Physics and the Director of the K1 Project, Center for Nuclear Studies, at Columbia University. His research has spanned the fields of atomic, nuclear and particle physics, and he is presently focused on searches for new particles and new interactions using the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. He joined the Columbia faculty in 2006. He was previously a Professor of Physics at the California Institute of Technology, where he was a recipient of the 1999 Feynman Teaching Award. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia in 1987.

Dr. Jing Bai is an Associate Professor and the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) in Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). She received her Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology in 2007. Dr. Bai’s current research activities focus on nano-photonics, nano-photovoltaics, nonlinear optics, and nanoscale biomedical devices. Her research at UMD has been supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Whiteside Institute for Clinical Research, the MN Drive Initiatives, and the Graduate School of University of Minnesota. She is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE), the Optical Society of America (OSA), and the American Physics Society (APS).

Dr. Bai’s current research activities focus on nano-photonics, nano-photovoltaics, nonlinear optics, and nanoscale biomedical devices.

Joop Schoonman (1943) is since 1984 Professor of Inorganic Chemistry. He received his master's degree in Solid State Chemistry at the Utrecht University in 1967. He completed in 1971 his Ph.D. Thesis cum laude on the topic "Electrical Conduction and Polarization of Lead Bromide" under supervision of Professor Van Santen. He was in 1974 postdoc at Stanford University. His main research interests are gas phase deposition of nanostructured materials for innovative solar cells, rechargeable Li-ion batteries, solid oxide fuel cells, and chemical gas sensors. Moreover, the production and storage of hydrogen using nano-structured materials has his interest. His research at Utrecht and Delft has led to over 550 publications and he is co-editor of 11 books/proceedings and co-editor of several international Journals. He was in the period 2002-2006 scientific director of the Delft Institute for Sustainable Energy. He performed a couple of administrative positions and has been Dean of the Faculty of Chemical Technology and Materials Science for four years. After his dean’ office period he has been visiting professor at MIT. He is an honorary professor in chemistry (1996) and received an honorary doctor's degree (2000) at the Transilvania University of Brasov, Romania, is honorary professor of Physics at the Warsaw University of Technology (2006), Poland, and received an honorary doctor's degree (2006) at the Ovidius University of Constanta, Romania. He was appointed in the period 2000-2006 also at Leiden University and is since 2004 visiting professor at Stanford University. He received several awards, among which the most prestigious one, received in 2001, The Royal Shell Award for Sustainable Development and Energy. In 2006 he was elected the first Dutch Master in Materials, i.e., the greatest material’s scientist in The Netherlands since 80 years. He retired June 1st, 2008 and was still responsible for eight PhD students for which he received a special appointment at the Department ChemE. Since his retirement he is consulting professor at Stanford University and visiting professor at the Delft University of Technology and has been visiting professor at the ETH in Zürich and will be visiting professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Dr. Michael Giersig is Professor at Freie University Berlin, Dept. of Physics and at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materiallien und Energie GmbH, Institute of Nanoarchitectures for Energy Conversion; Berlin. He have recieved his PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) from the Freie University Berlin, Germany. He was Awarded with the Lee Hsun Research Award on Materials Science by the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2013. He is also the Foreign Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is Co- Inventor of 10 patents and Co-Founder of two companies. Xinhua Peng received her Ph.D. degree in atomic and molecular physics from Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in July 2003. After that, she arrived at the University of Dortmund, Germany, as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow. Since 2008, she is professor at University of Science and Technology of China. She was awarded National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. She has published more than 50 papers in reputed journals.

SHI Baosen is a professor of physics in University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). He received his PhD from USTC in 1998. After that, he joined the Laboratory of Nonlinear Optics as a lecturer, and the Key Laboratory of Quantum Information of Chinese Academy Sciences as an associate professor in 2001, a full professor in 2008. Between April 2001 and November 2004, he worked at the NEC Tsukuba Laboratories of Japan as a JST researcher. In 2015, he was supported by China National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists. He has co-authored more than 80 peer-reviewed journal papers. His main interests include quantum information based on atomic ensemble, nonlinear frequency transfer using resonant cavity, interface between atomic system and photonic system and atomic optics.

Dr.Xiaoke Yi received Ph.D. degree from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in 2004. She joined the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, the University of Sydney as a research fellow in 2003, a lecturer in 2006 and a Senior Lecturer in 2010. Starting from 2011, she is a QEII fellow and a senior lecturer with the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, the University of Sydney. Her main research interests include photonic signal processing, microwave photonics, biophotonics and phased-array antennas. She worked as Senior lecturer in University of Sydney during the period (2010 – 2012) and as Associate Professor also in the University of Sydney.

Rinku Basak received B.Sc. Engg. (Electrical & Electronic Engg.) degree from Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET), Khulna, Bangladesh in 2004, he received M.Sc. Engg. (Electrical & Electronic Engg.) degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET), Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2007 and after that he enrolled in PhD in EEE at the same university. Mr. Basak has been involved in research on Semiconductor Lasers specially, on Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) since May 2006 and published research papers in different standard Journals & Conferences. He is working as Special Editorial Assistant of The AIUB Journal of Science and Engineering (AJSE), Bangladesh since September 2008. He is working as Technical Program Committee member & Reviewer of The International Conference on Consumer Electronics, Communications and Networks (CECNet), China since 2013.
